Job Description
As a Heavy Equipment Operator for KCEC you will operate motorized heavy equipment and perform ground support duties in support and assistance of line maintenance/construction workers, ensuring efficient distribution of electric power to consumers.
What You’ll Do:
- Operates heavy construction equipment in support of the line maintenance/construction functions, including, but not necessarily limited to, backhoes, trenchers, bulldozers, augers, forklifts, basket trucks, crane booms, conductor reels, winches, ancillary equipment, etc.
- When assigned groundman duties, performs those functions that support and assist lineman and other personnel assigned to climbing and other above-ground activities including, but not limited to, conveyance and elevation of tools, parts and equipment.
- Framing and setting poles; excavating holes; installing hardware and ancillary parts to poles; unreeling, splicing, and hoisting of conductor wire, hoisting transformers, sectionalizers, etc., using cranes, booms, hoists, slings, cables, ropes, lines, and other manual or power lifting devices and equipment.
- Functions as safety coordinator in certain activities and situations, ensuring compliance to safe working techniques, methods, rules and procedures.
- Maintains a continuing updated knowledge of tools, equipment, safety gear and paraphernalia, and their accompanying safe usage procedures.
- Receives training in and demonstrates proficiency in administration of first-aid, rescue and basic emergency medical treatment, and maintains a current updated knowledge of these functions.
- Ensures availability of fire-fighting equipment and maintains a current knowledge of firefighting methods and measures.
- Receives training and demonstrates proficiency in use of radio communications equipment and systems.
- All other duties as assigned.
What you bring:
- High School education or GED, required.
- Post-high school training in the use and operation of motorized, wheeled and tracked heavy construction equipment.
- Must have a valid CDL
- Basic knowledge of first-echelon repair and maintenance of such equipment is desirable
- The incumbent must possess sufficient prior work experience in similar type duties wherein the skills, abilities and learning aptitudes to perform the position’s functions have been amply demonstrated.
- A sound working knowledge of all job-related provisions of the National Safety Code, OSHA Regulations, and REA guidelines and specifications.
Working Conditions; Physical and Cognitive Requirements:
- The position’s essential functions and principal duties are performed out-of-doors and are thus subject to inclement weather, temperature extremes, and unimproved terrain.
- Sitting, standing, walking, kneeling, stooping, bending, crouching, working in awkward positions, and pushing, pulling and lifting of heavy objects is required, as is working on, around and about heavy moving equipment.
- Hazards are inherent to the position and, while some control and mitigation is possible, they cannot be eliminated, and include cuts, falls, scrapes, bruises, electrical shocks, falling objects and working around and with vehicles and moving parts and equipment.
- The incumbent must possess normal levels of spatial ability; manual dexterity; form and depth perception; speech, hearing and visual acuity; and bodily equilibrium and balance.
- The incumbent must possess and demonstrate the cognitive skills and abilities to perform the following activities on a regular basis: read, write; perform mathematical calculations; weigh and measure; learn from and perform activities based on written text; implement orders and directives; analyze and solve problems; evaluate results; train and direct others; present oral and written information; adhere to fixed methods/procedures/standards; coordinate and integrate personal duties with those of others; adjust to constantly changing duties; and, react promptly and appropriately to critical and/or emergency situations.
