Safety

Kit Carson Electric regards safe practice as a priority where electrical equipment is involved. Electricity is no respecter of persons. It can cause serious injury if treated with little regard. For this reason, Kit Carson Electric encourages everyone to keep in mind the following safety rules when working near electrical equipment. Practicing these measures could avoid unnecessary accidents or injury:

  • Consider any electrical line dangerous.
  • Do not play near electrical equipment, and keep all objects such as kites, metal ladders and antennas away from power lines.
  • Be aware of your surroundings when working.
  • Stay clear of power lines. Doing this avoids the danger of electrical shock.
  • Always report unsafe conditions to the co-op immediately. Never try to resolve the problem yourself.

Stay away from down power lines and contact the cooperative immediately at (575) 758-2258. Do not attempt to raise or move the power line. Always contact the cooperative. Contact Kit Carson Electric before digging in areas where underground power lines may be. We will locate and mark the path of underground distribution lines from the transformer to the meter, free of charge. Report all potential power line hazards to KCEC, including trees growing into the lines, unusually low sagging lines, or exposed underground electrical equipment. Never touch a person or object that has come in contact with a power line. Remember, our bodies are excellent conductors of electricity. Coming in contact with anyone who has hold of a live wire could lead to serious injury or even death. For more information about electrical safety contact the co-op, we will be happy to answer questions concerning your safety around electricity. KCEC also has informational reading material on the basics of electricity. Please contact our office to find more information.

Kit Carson Electric sponsors an annual Coloring Contest for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade students, to promote electrical safety. Safety presentations can be conducted by a KCEC representative for schools and other public establishments. Call us to schedule a demonstration on electrical safety with your organization. Remember – The Safe Haven Program assists children and adults involved in situations that require prompt attention. If you see an REC truck and need help, approach the KCEC vehicle. The employee will assist you by contacting proper authorities to get help as quickly as possible.
