Microgrid Project
The Kit Carson Electric Cooperative Microgrid Project aims to enhance energy resilience and reliability in Northern New Mexico by deploying distributed Battery Energy Storage Systems in areas susceptible to wildfires and extreme weather events. The project involves installing 7.5 megawatts of BESS, providing a total storage capacity of 38.25 megawatt-hours, across three key locations: the Village of Taos Ski Valley, Peñasco, and El Rito West.

These lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery systems are designed to supply critical and emergency power during disruptions, ensuring that essential services such as fire stations, evacuation centers, and healthcare facilities remain operational. Additionally, the microgrids will support residents who rely on electrically powered medical devices by providing uninterrupted power during emergencies. By alleviating strain on the power grid in high-risk areas, the project also aims to reduce the likelihood of utility-ignited wildfires.
