Job Description

We are seeking a highly experienced and dedicated Safety Operations Manager to oversee all aspects of safety compliance, operational efficiency, and risk management within our propane distribution network. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of the propane industry’s specific safety regulations, technologies, and best practices. This leadership role is crucial for maintaining our commitment to a safe working environment for our employees and reliable, safe service for our customers.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS:

Safety and Compliance

  • Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive safety programs and policies in strict adherence to federal, state, and local regulations, including but not limited to DOT, OSHA, NFPA 58/54, and relevant industry standards.
  • Lead the investigation of all incidents, accidents, and near-misses, determining root causes, and implementing effective corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Manage all safety-related documentation, reporting, and record-keeping, ensuring timely and accurate submissions to regulatory bodies.
  • Conduct regular safety audits, inspections, and risk assessments of all facilities, vehicles, and operational processes.
  • Oversee the maintenance and calibration of safety equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE).

Operations Management

  • Streamline and standardize operational procedures across all locations to maximize efficiency and maintain high standards of service delivery.
  • Collaborate with the Operations and Maintenance departments to ensure all vehicles, bulk storage tanks, and equipment are maintained and operated safely and in compliance with regulations.
  • Manage the safety budget, allocating resources effectively for training, compliance tools, and risk mitigation efforts.
  • Monitor operational performance metrics related to safety and efficiency, developing action plans for continuous improvement.

Leadership and Training

  • Lead and mentor a team of safety professionals and operational staff, fostering a proactive safety culture throughout the organization.
  • Design and deliver mandatory safety training programs for new hires and recurring training for all employees (e.g., hazmat, defensive driving, cylinder handling, emergency response).
  • Act as the primary point of contact for regulatory inspections and audits.
  • Communicate safety performance, emerging risks, and compliance updates to senior management.

Qualifications:

  • Required Experience
    • 10+ years of progressive experience in the propane industry (LP Gas), demonstrating a comprehensive knowledge of bulk storage, transportation, delivery, and service operations.
    • 5+ years of experience in a management or supervisory role with direct responsibility for safety and/or operations staff.
    • Proven track record of successfully implementing and managing complex safety programs in a highly regulated environment.

    Skills and Knowledge

    • In-depth knowledge of NFPA 58 (Liquefied Petroleum Gas Code) and NFPA 54 (National Fuel Gas Code) is essential.
    • Expert knowledge of DOT Hazardous Materials regulations, OSHA requirements, and pipeline safety standards.
    • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence cultural change and interact effectively with all levels of the organization.
    • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving abilities, particularly in root cause analysis and corrective action planning.
    • Proficiency in using safety management software, Microsoft Office Suite, and other relevant operational tools.
    • Relevant industry certifications (e.g., LP3, LP5, or specialized propane/hazmat certifications) are highly desirable.

    Education

    • Bachelor’s degree in occupational safety, Engineering, Business Management, or a related field. Equivalent work experience will be considered.

    Travel

    • Ability to travel frequently to various company locations for audits, training, and incident response.
